Abstract:

Simple coupled chains of logistic maps are considered. The local behaviour of an iterated logistic map is well known, but the global behaviours reported here for the coupled chain are surprising and not intuitively obvious. We see, for certain coupling strengths and inputs, thresholding behaviour, smoothing behaviour and edge detection. That these can coexist in the same system is a paradox and is a consequence of the `strongly nonlinear signal processing' which these chains perform.
